Interview: Nicola Haffmans @ Next

Nicola Haffmans, born in November 1988 in Holland (and actually very gifted in languages) has something we find lacking in the most newcomers: Personality. Getting an amazing jump start largely owing to casting director Russel Marsh, the lioness-like goddess made her debut on NYCs runways and continued her amazing show seasin in Paris, walking for Alexander McQueen’s and Alber Elbaz’s Pret a Porter shows. Nicola pulls of runway looks with certain gracefulness like she’s never done something else. Acting either as “African Queen” in Jalouse or doing the vamp for Lanvin.
There is one point sure as dead: This girl has the look and the right attitude to become a star!

Interview: James Mahon

Imogen Morris Clarke

There is a certain routine on New York’s streets: If there is a promising girl (rarely boy) intown, it doesn’t take long until she finds herself infront of James Mahon's lense. He has a good reason to demand these girls: His one-of-a-kind ability to capture models in a very pure way (often associated with certain lightning conditions) which gives his work a great deal of individual touch, let’s say oxygen for eyes & mind. A further attribute of James’ work is that his focus is definitely aimed on expressions; expressions, that consistend with environment and light to create an interaction of special kind.

1. First of all: have you always wanted to be a photographer? How did you get started in the business?

When I was younger I thought that I would become a surf photographer. I grew up near the beach in Los Angeles and it seemed like it would be a great job to travel around. As I got older though, I realized that maybe that was not my thing.

Vanessa Hessler

2. How would someone describe your photographer style?

People always tell me that my style is 'raw". Although, that is not how I would describe it.

3. What makes a girl interesting for you to shoot with her? Is there a certain "type" of model you prefer? What are people looking for right now?

I prefer to shoot outgoing girls with a sense of humor over just about everything else. Things get very personal, very quickly when I shoot a girl, and if she does not have the personality for it, things fall flat. However if she is cool, things look really amazing. I would not say there is a "type" that I prefer. I usually try to see what the agency sees in a girl, and trust that they know what they are doing, even if I don't see it. I would never pretend to know what people are looking for right now. I really have no idea. It does seem that confidence and personality are always an attribute.

4. You've had all the best models in front of your camera: Sigrid Agren, Arlenis Sosa, Imogen Clarke & Constance Jaoblonsi just to name a few. Who were you the most impressed by?

Almost all of the girls I shoot are impressive in some way. It is really easy to forget how young some of these girls are and it is always impressive to me how they travel around and handle themselves so well in so many situations. With the girls you mentioned, they all have a casual confidence about them that I think people really respond to. I shot a girl like that recently named Katya. She was so cool and willing to do anything.

5. Do you always bring some kind of concept to a shoot, or just let you get inspired by the mood on the set/ the model?

I am always trying to make the same mood no matter who or where I am shooting. So it just depends on the weather and transportation and if I can get in somewhere. Then I try to shoot the same mood, over and over.

Janine Henkes

6. What do you hate about your work?

How consistent it is. However, I really love that too.

7. Are there any magazines you have worked for so far?

Nylon, Preen, Dazed, Paper, Interview. However, all of these were some time ago. Some like 5 years.

8. Would you consider yourself as fashion photographer?

Yes. Even though I know most people would disagree because I don't have any high end labels in my photos, but I really believe that shooting a girl in what she shows up in can be fashion. Also if you just add a little something that is an important label, and let it blend in with a girl’s natural sense of style, I think this can be really amazing, I love that look. However, the girl has to have a sense of style on her own to begin with.

Aline Weber

9. Is there anyone who gives you inspirations for what you do/ someone whose work you admire?

Bob Richardson has been the biggest influence on me. Not so much ascetically, but in attitude. I assisted him for 3 years or so in LA and he was really great about sharing ideas and being true to yourself. He was the real deal, and I was very lucky to have worked so closely with him.

10. Tell us, what would be your dream shoot?

I want to shoot huge campaigns for designers all over the world. I just want to do it the way that I shoot now.

THANK YOU, JAMES! Good luck further on!
